Description:

Hike for Wednesday January 1 - Duncan Knob

With David, Lou and Becky leading a Northern Virginia Hiking Club hike this day with many of their rowdy and merry followers you can come out and enjoy a peaceful and pleasant hike to celebrate the New Year and wish Duncan a Happy Birthday on this 9 mile circuit hike to Duncan Knob with 2000' elevation gain.

We will start on the Gap Creek Trail, then form a counterclockwise loop with the Scothorn Gap Trail and Massanutten Trail. We will scramble up (optional) to the rocky Duncan Knob for lunch, with a beautiful 270 degree view.

Carpools will leave at 7:30am from the parking lot at Fair Oaks Mall (I-66 exit 57B) near the Cheesecake Factory and the Centreville Park-and-Ride lot (I-66 exit 52). If you would like to carpool from these locations, just show about ~15 minutes prior to the meeting time. Carpools should wait until the departure time before leaving.

Some people have established carpools already that meet at these locations and occasionally they have room for others. In the case where they do not have room for additional people, the other folks there can form their own carpools. In the case where there is no room for one individual, that person would need to drive themselves.

Meet at the trail head at ~9:15am.

Directions to the trailhead, GPS Coordinates 38.708390, -78.561596 (may take you a different route)

Take I-66 West to Exit 13, Linden.

From Exit 13 turn left and take route 79 0.1 miles to route 55.

Turn right onto 55 West. Take 55 West 5.4 miles and turn left onto 340 south.

Take 340 South for 23.5 miles and turn right onto 675. (The turn onto 675 is a little difficult to notice watch your odometer. While on 340 the turn onto 675 is .4 miles on your right after you pass under the route 211 overpass as you are entering Luray. When you turn right onto 675 there is also a bridge over a small creek. The road sign for 675 is on the left side of 340 as you approach the turn, it is also called Mechanics Street.)

Take 675 8.4 miles and turn left at intersection onto dirt road 274(number may not be visible), Crisman (or Chrisman) Hollow Rd (this turn can be tricky).

Take 274, Crisman Hollow Road, 3.0 miles and park on either side of the road near the Gap Creek Trail sign.
