Cabin Maintenance

Cabin Volunteer Roles

PATC operates 45+ cabins in four states (VA, PA, MD, and WV). PATC cabins range from primitive to modern and are rented out to help fund the Club’s primary mission of trail maintenance.  Some of the PATC managed cabins are government owned (e.g., Shenandoah National Park, U S Forest Service and various State agencies).  Other cabins are owned by PATC.

Cabin Maintenance

Each cabin requires one or more cabin maintainers to keep the cabin safe and operational. Although the Cabins Committee looks for Maintainers with strong construction or maintenance skills, we also accept those with a lot of home maintenance experience.

Cabin maintainers inspect, identify issues and implement corrections to their assigned cabins.  The maintainer will keep the cabin clean, safe and orderly for cabin renters. Cabin maintainers also keep the surrounding land safe and secure. Most of the cabins have vehicle access, some requiring a 4-wheel drive. Some cabins have no vehicle access and require a hike in to reach the cabin.

Cabin maintainers usually visit their assigned cabins every other month and more often if they are retired. Cabin maintainers may also need to respond to immediate issues that occur during rentals. Duties could include cleaning, minor repairs, providing supplies and accessing larger repair projects. Cabin Maintainers report all their trips and status to the Cabin Chair and their supervisors and work with PATC management to resolve/correct any issues.
