Storm Causes Major Problems on Tuscarora Trail in Pennsylvania

Pete Brown, district manager of the Tuscarora Trail in Pennsylvania reports that the trail in the Tuscarora State Forest is "effectively closed between the Hemlock Road to the Fowler Hollow Shelter #3 and probably continuing northbound to Second Narrows Road.  Extreme winds during the last week of May blew down extensive areas of trees.  Although problems around the small area around the shelter have been addressed, there are detours and large trees down that hikers will need to scramble over or under to get through.  Beyond that area the trail is essentially impassable.  The Tuscarora State Forest is planning a timber sale to salvage the downed trees but it could take up to a year before the damaged area is cleared."

Pete clarified that some but not all necessary detours are marked.  Hikers looking for more information could contact the Tuscarora State Forest office at 717-356-3191.

Pete sent the pictures and comments below to illustrate the problem.
