Description:

Northwest Branch Trail (Parking: Burnt Mills East Special Park)  10701 Columbia Pike, Silver Spring MD 20901This is a beautiful natural surface trail, 3.5 mile out-and-back hike, with a couple of stream crossings, steep climbs, rocks and tree roots. Please wear appropriate footwear and walking sticks are recommended.  We will start our hike just to the left facing the kiosk at the end of the parking lot. The narrow gorge requires a steep up and down hill section during the first 0.25 miles, following the sign for the Northwest Branch trail at the intersection with Copperhead Run. After going down the incline, we get on the flat Northwest Trail, adjacent to the Northwest Branch (of the Anacostia River) until the 1.2 mile mark, directly underneath the Beltway.  At that point, the trail climbs again (to get around another narrow section) returning to the water at our turnaround point at the 1.7-mile point.

Amenities: No restrooms or water at trailhead, but there is a Starbucks available at the adjacent strip mall.
