PATC Map 7. Fare: $20/$25. Departs from 17th & K Sts. and the Grosvenor Metro. Hikers start at Keys Gap where long hikers follow the AT south about two miles to a hilltop where they can see the valley below through the trees; long hikers then return to Keys Gap, where they follow the moderate hikers going north on the AT. All hikers will take a side-trip to Loudon Heights after about 3.5 miles, where they will find two scenic overlooks of Harpers Ferry and the rivers below. After taking in the views, all hikers return to the AT and continue north on a long descent past several picturesque overlooks of the river. Hikers then cross the bridge toward Harpers Ferry, where they will follow the AT past several overlooks before reaching the center of town. Hikers then will return to the bridge by following Shenandoah Street; there will be a portion of a reconstructed canal and the remnants of old paper mills and other buildings on their left. Once they reach the bridge, hikers will bear left on a trail past a parking lot (autos only) and under the bridge over the Potomac River; the river will be on their left. About 10 minutes after the parking lot, the trail crosses the street to some stone steps that ascend to Harpers Ferry National Park, which is outside of town and where the bus will be parked. Hikers wishing shorter variations of either hike can skip Loudon Heights or the Harpers Ferry traverse. Hikers wanting to explore Harpers Ferry and hiking opportunities there can take the bus to the National Park and then either walk to town following the Wanderbirds map (3.5 mile roundtrip) or take the shuttle that goes to Harpers Ferry from the Visitors Center every 10-15 minutes. All hikers can also take the shuttle from the town center (as shown on the map) to the Visitor Center and the Wanderbirds bus. Note: Harpers Ferry has several historical hikes in town and others near the bus that hikers taking the bus to the Park may want to explore. Est.: 13.2 miles, 1800’ ascent; 9.2 miles, 1200’ ascent.
