Two short circuit hikes in south-central Pennsylvania with a total distance for both hikes combined of approximately 12 kilometers (7½ miles). Meet 10:30 am at the Caledonia State Park parking area along US Route 30 (intersection of PA Route 233 & US Route 30).
The first hike of 4.3 km (2.7 miles) will be along the historic Charcoal Heath Trail within Caledonia State Park. The second hike will be a short distance to the south starting at the Old Forge picnic area within the Michaux State Forest. This circuit hike of 7.7 km (4.8 miles) will ascend the Appalachian Trail (AT) to the scenic vista at Chimney Rock and then circle back on the blue-blazed side trail, going past the PATC Hermitage Cabin back to the AT near the Tumbling Run Shelters, then back to Old Forge. We can take a slight detour at the Hermitage Cabin to view the rock-climbing area (Shaffer Rocks) near the cabin.
Carpool meeting location at Prospect Plaza in Frederick at 9:15 am. Meet near the Lube Center. Prospect Plaza is located on West Jefferson Street near the intersections of US Route 340, I-70, and U Route 15.
