Description: Because Great Falls parking lot is closed due to the federal government shutdown, we will start the previously announced Great Falls hike from nearby Riverbend Park which is not a federal facility.
From the lower Riverbend Park parking lot, we will hike along the Potomac River for 1.7 miles to the Great Falls Visitors Center.  Stop at the picnic tables there and eat, or continue with the group for another 2.7 miles to the three overlooks and the Potomack Canal ruins, then eat at the picnic tables.  Return via the river trail to the Riverbend Park Visitors Center for a total of 5 miles.  Trail is muddy in spots so wear waterproof shoes.  Virtually no elevation. Bring lunch and water. Directions: I-495 to exit  44 for VA  193, Georgetown Pike, toward Langley/Great Falls.  Take Georgetown Pike (Route 193) west to Riverbend Road  (traffic light past Great Falls Park light). Turn right and make another slight right at Jeffery Rd.  The sign for the Park  will be on the right at Potomac Hills Street.  Drive down to the parking lots at the end of the road. Park at the upper and lower parking lots at the Riverbend Visitors Center (8700 Potomac Hills St, Great Falls, VA 22066).  The leader will record hiker information at the lower lot.  Bathrooms are available at the Riverbend Visitors Center, as well as potable water.   No bathrooms or potable water at Great Falls Park.
