The 18 Cabins of Old Rag -- A Field Guide for Bushwackers
PATC's "Mr. Bushwacker" Len Wheat put this little guide together for those interested in heading off-trail to explore some of the old homesites located west of Old Rag Mountain. But Len ran into a problem. Shenandoah National Park had two concerns. First, there was concern that novice hikers might use the guide and get lost off-trail without the aid of blazed routes. Second, there was concern about antiquity protection.
While the concerns are valid, Len felt the guide worthy enough to publish, and here it is. You'll never find it for sale in the Park, and it's not a professionally printed guidebook (it's GBC bound with cardstock covers), but the information is interesting none-the-less. In deference to the Park's concerns, PATC recommends this guide only for experienced hikers familiar with off-trail travel. PATC also reminds hikers that it's a violation of Federal law to disturb or remove Park antiquities, with severe penalties for those who try. Hike carefully, keep your eyes open for the proper route, and observe but don't disturb.
