Guide to Massanutten Mountain Hiking Trails
(4th edition, 2011) The latest revision of the PATC Guide to Massanutten Hiking Trails, 4th ed. makes a break with the past: it contains GPS coordinates of features in the area covered by the guide. Coordinates are presented for parking areas, trail intersections, overlooks, springs, campsites, etc., many of which were not even mentioned in earlier editions. Some of the features are not on the trail or even visible from the trail, but are a short distance off the trail. Use of GPS makes it much easier to find these places. Precise distances to places along trails are given to help users distinguish between locations. Data are presented to enable the use of the web to derive driving directions to trailhead parking areas. In addition, the revision contains new sections on wildflowers, services and swimming holes. The new Browns Hollow Trail, the Jawbone Peak and Duncan Knob spur trails are now included. Finally, the description of the 71 mile Massanutten National Recreation Trail has been broken into sections as are the descriptions of other long trails in PATC guides making it far easier to follow than with earlier editions.
