The PATC offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities, from local hikes and cross-country ski trips to mountaineering trips and foreign excursions.
See our Calendar of Events for hikes organized by PATC and other local hiking organizations like The Wanderbirds, and the Capital Hiking Club. PATC's hiking committee organizes hikes for varied levels of skill and stamina. Family hikes are frequently scheduled to suburban destinations and are occasionally "stroller friendly." The K-9 hiking group organizes dog walks. Vigorous hikers can join the long-distance hikers for trips to Shenandoah National Park and other challenging trails. You can even join the club’s Naturalist on his monthly Natural History hike.
The Ski Touring Section offers tips on gear selection and beginner's weekends, as well as trips to favorite X-country destinations.
The Mountaineering Section has a long history with the PATC. The Section publishes a newletter (Uprope) and guides to climbing sites. Lessons are offered to beginners, and sponsors a busy schedule of climbing trips.
Use the menu links to find out more about these opportunities, and visit our on-line calendar (and the section websites) for details about upcoming trips.
Rent a PATC Cabin for a base from which to explore.
The PATC also maintains 44 three-sided overnight shelters along the Appalachian Trail from Rockfish Gap (Virginia) to Pine Grove Furnace (Pennsylvania), and on the Tuscarora Trail.
The American Hiking Society has prepared a fact sheet on the benefits of hiking. Backcountry.com has a useful online reference for planning a backpaking trip.
