May 2014 Volunteers of the Month
Randy Motz and Georgia Harris

Randy and Georgia are a husband and wife team who devote many hours of volunteer service to PATC.

Both are Appalachian Trail through hikers and they have written two books about their experience on the trail. Georgia has a full time job with the National Institute of Standards and Technology and Randy performs Native American flute music. Despite their busy lives, they still find time to volunteer for PATC in a variety of areas.

Randy served four years on the club's Executive Committee as Supervisor of Activities and they both have been active in various hiking activities, including a program between PATC and the Light House for the Blind to introduce blind hikers to the many trails in our area.

Randy and Georgia's latest and most complex task is to head the Workshops, Excursions and Entertainment Sub-Committee for the 2015 Appalachian Trail Biennial, which the club will sponsor along with our partner, the Mountain Club of Maryland. This important part of the Biennial requires a large amount of planning, coordinating, recruiting and attention to detail.

Randy and Georgia have spent many hours working with volunteers who will present workshops, lead excursions and arrange no less than ten large entertainment events that will take place during the conference. The logistics of this part of the event are daunting and they have worked efficiently with the host school, Shenandoah University, to make sure that all the many technical and operational details come together in a smooth presentation. Few people will see how much planning and expertise goes into planning a weeklong event with a myriad of differing activities.

Randy and Georgia are already working so hard to help make the 2015 biennial Appalachian Trail Conference a success. For this and many other reasons, PATC thanks them.
