Richard Rooney and his wife, Ruth, live just a stone's throw away from PATC Headquarters in Vienna, VA. One afternoon in 2008, Richard came by headquarters and asked if there was anything he could do to help. Pat Fankhauser immediately showed him some of the tasks that needed doing.
Since that first day, Richard, better known as "Rooney", has been an invaluable volunteer, handling a wide array of tasks. Richard is responsible for the receipt and shipment of cabin key packets and updates renter's records. He maintains the inventory at the cabins desk, making sure all the keys are in good order and the envelopes are in good shape as well. Richard has established high standards for the key packet material that goes out to our cabin patrons.
Richard also administers the compiling and mailing of all new member packets, sends out the renewing member's cards and mails newsletters to stores when the latest issue is available. Behind the scenes, he maintains the club's stock of sodas, collects the money, purchases whatever stock is required and takes the empty cans to the local recycling facility.
Richard is also the "go to" guy for a number of other jobs at Headquarters. When needed, he helps the Sales Department make up guide sets and assists in filling orders. When volunteers are in short supply, Richard occasionally staffs the sales desk. He helps with the preparation of PATC's Annual Meeting, serves as a "Trail Talker", staffs the Club's display at community events and helps prepare "Trail Talker" boxes for upcoming events.
Richard was also instrumental in the remodeling of the Paula Strain Council Meeting Room last winter.
In his spare time, Richard is a member and officer of the American Legion Post 180 in Vienna. He also loves dancing; Ruth, of course being his first and foremost dancing partner. Ruth and Richard hold many ribbons of excellence from their dancing careers.
Richard's outgoing personality makes working with him a pleasure. Though he may not be on a trail clearing blowdowns, Richard's energy is contagious and his contributions to the efficiency, strength and vitality of PATC are invaluable.
PATC is deeply appreciative to Richard Rooney for his dedicated service at our offices in Vienna.
