Safe Hiking & Backpacking

Our backcountry trails are still safer than most of our city streets. But incidents such as theft and harassment can occur on the trail. A few basic precautions will help ensure that all your hikes are safe and enjoyable.

  1. Leave an itinerary with someone you trust and have them contact the appropriate agency if you don’t notify them of your return.

  2. Plan ahead.

  3. Avoid hiking alone.

  4. Don’t share your plans with strangers on the trail.

  5. Dress plainly and don’t flaunt expensive gear.

  6. Be especially alert at road crossings.

  7. Don’t leave gear or valuables in your vehicle at trail heads.

  8. Avoid confrontations and report any trouble to the local law enforcement agency.
