The presentation of awards was an important part of the meeting. The club presents awards to recognize outstanding achievement by both members and non-members.  Here are the people who were honored at the dinner.

Myron Avery Award
The highest honor presented by the club is awarded for outstanding volunteer activity over the past year.

Jim Fetig, left, receives award from Joe LombardoThis year’s recipient for our highest honor was Jim Fetig.  Jim was a relatively recent member of our club, joining in 2013. But he has built his reputation rapidly as a go-to volunteer with exceptional commitment and abilities.

He is a very active trail overseer and is a certified chain sawyer.  He is frequently asked to perform chain saw chores throughout our area especially following major storms.  He is a member in good standing in the Crapper Crew and has expressed great enjoyment in performing these duties.  He volunteers time working with several PATC crews, such as the Hoodlums and the Cadillac Crew.

His role as the Club Ridgerunner Manager is extremely time consuming and is one of his most important club tasks.  He serves as the supervisor for six Ridgerunners, who cover all 240 miles of the Appalachian Trail in our area.  As supervisor, he handles everything from hiring, training, mentoring and watching over this spirited group of trail ambassadors. He serves as the point of contact for our partners and with emergency personnel.

If this weren’t all enough, he serves in a number of administrative roles. This year, he was selected to serve as a member of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) Presidents Advisory Circle.  He is a member of the Maryland AT Management Committee.  He is an excellent writer and has written for the AT Journeys, the ATC blog and for the AT Facebook page.

His energy is contagious, and his extensive contributions reflect his high efficiency, professionalism, strength and vitality.  His outgoing and courteous personality and expertise set the standard for others to emulate.  For all of this, Jim Fetig was deserving of PATC’s highest award.

Honorary Life Membership Awards
The Honorary Life Membership Award is presented to members who have contributed to the club over a long period of time in many areas and have shown outstanding service. The nominees must be nominated by a member of the club and approved by the PATC council. This year, there are four recipients of the Honorary Life Membership Awards.

Steve Barber
Steve has been an active member of the PATC since 2006. His expertise as a builder and carpenter have been of great to value to the club. Steve also has been a trail maintainer and cabin caretaker.  Steve greatest accomplishment for the club was to co-lead the construction of the Old Rag Cabin, a project involving many weekends over a five and a half year period and thousands of volunteer hours to complete.

John Corwith
John has been an active member of the PATC since 2007. As a regular Cadillac Crew member and leader of the crew from 2013 to 2016, John contributed his expertise as a carpenter and trail builder to many projects throughout the area. John was the other co-leader in the construction of the Old Rag Cabin.

David House
David House has been a member since 2000. He is a humble fellow who takes pride in solving problems and getting things done. He is an overseer or co-overseer on the AT in Maryland for almost 10 miles. David is always scouting for fallen trees to clear and erosion problems to address elsewhere on the Appalachian Trail, Catoctin Trail and the Sugarloaf Trail systems. All told, Dave has helped out on almost three quarters of the Maryland AT.

Chris Firme
Chris FirmeChris has volunteered with the PATC since the mid-80s. He currently oversees the Trail Patrol and serves as the Hikes Chair for the PATC North Chapter. He rarely misses a work trip with the Yankee Clippers, working tirelessly on sections of the AT and Tuscarora Trail. His knowledge in biology, wildlife habitats, trail maintenance, environmental issues, as well as current rules and regulations effecting the trail, have made him a valuable asset to the club.

Appreciation Awards
This recognition goes to non-members who make significant contributions to the club’s mission.  There were two recipients this year.

Stephanie Chapman
Stephanie is an interpretive specialist with the Lee Ranger District of the George Washington & Jefferson National Forests. Her duties include working with volunteers including PATC members. In this role she is very helpful and competent. She is the key to the coordination and effectiveness of the work of our club and the many other user groups in the National Forest.

Skip McManamay
Skip went above and beyond to repair roads on PATC property that had been damaged in the storms of the last year.  Those who drove on PATC property, including many cabin renters, benefited from his great work.
