US 40 Parking Lot Closures through September
The Maryland State Highway Administration is providing improvements and reconfiguration of the busy US 40 Appalachian Trail parking lot near Myersville, MD. The parking lot will be closed on some weekdays through September during these improvements. This lot is a popular trailhead for day hikes to Annapolis Rock, Black Rock Cliff and Washington Monument. Weekend parking should not be impacted by the closures.
Hikers can opt to start their hike out of nearby Washington Monument or Gathland State Parks on days when the US 40 trailhead is closed. A hiker determined to reach the Trail near US 40 can pay the entrance fee at Greenbrier State Park, arrive at the park Visitors Center and hike the steep 0.6-mile Bartman Hill Trail to the Appalachian Trail. Once a hiker reaches the AT, they proceed left to go north to US 40 and Annapolis Rock, which is 3 miles away, or turn right to hike 2 miles southbound to Washington Monument Park.
Questions regarding the scope and timeline of the road work should be directed to Sam at the Maryland State Highway Administration: email SDelaurence@sha.state.md.us, phone 301-624-8150.
