Who We Are

Trail Patrol is a group of volunteers dedicated to helping hikers and backpackers enjoy the outdoors safely and without harming the environment.

In a way, we can be considered as PATC’s “ambassadors.” We patrol more than 1,100 miles of PATC-maintained trails in northern Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, southern Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC; including trails in the Shenandoah National Park, George Washington National Forest and a 240-mile section of the Appalachian Trail from Rockfish Gap in Virginia north to the Pine Grove Furnace State Park in southern Pennsylvania.

Trail Patrol volunteers help hikers by providing a reassuring presence, information about trail conditions, directions to those who need them, and first aid when necessary. In addition, we monitor trail conditions for the PATC and help keep the trails, cabins and shelters safe and well-maintained. We also educate hikers and backpackers about Leave No Trace outdoor ethics.

And we are friends who have fun as we hike the trails together.

We look forward to seeing you on the trail!
